How Does Your Baby Grow…2 mths

So, I took Bryant & Ceili Rain in for well checks on Friday.  They are both growing on target and doing well.

Here’s Bry’s stats and since he tied Josiah for weight and height at birth I’ll throw his in to compare and for fun, here’s Ceili Rain’s

             Bryant                                   Josiah                                 Ceili Rain
Weight  13 lb 12 oz (90%)                 14 lbs 13 oz (97%)             13 lb 12 oz (75%)
Height   26 inches (over 97%)            25 inches (97%)                  25 3/4 inches (90%)

Dr. B said that Bryant is “off the charts” for his height.  He bypassed ‘Siah by 1 inch.  So, he really is a tall baby!

Ceili Rain is doing well too…here’s her 18 mth stats:
Weight:  24 lbs 15 oz (60%)…this is a good improvement from her 15 month check up.
Height:  32 3/4 inches (80%)…still not as tall as any of her brothers or sister at this age so I remain with my guess that she’ll be our petite one!

She’s enjoying being a big sister and loves to give kisses over and over to Bryant.  She also loves baby dolls, her brothers and, in her eyes, Zoe can do no wrong.  She acts as though she is the same age as her older siblings and tries to do everything they do and gets angry when she can’t or isn’t allowed.  And her favorite song is “Roll over”  which I will have to get on video.  We’re working on teaching her “Roll Tide” but she hasn’t got that down yet.

Happy Fall Ya’ll

Even though it’s still in the 90s and supposedly “fall,”  I had to share how our little fashionista plans to dress for the cooler weather!

I found these crocheted hats on ebay at a steal of a price and was able to purchase two for Ceili Rain and two for Zoe.  Yes, they have the cuter than cute big flower clips.  We just happened to not put it on when she put the hat on.

Don’t let those sweet curls and smiles fool ya.  She whipped that hat right off .2 seconds after I turned the camera off.  We’ll work on it and she will enjoy being stylish for the fall…she will I tell ya!

I believe Mark’s about to remove GIMP from my computer if I keep playing with these pictures!
The hands are Ceili Rain’s and her Papa’s (and I believe she’s not going to share Papa, hence the reason I say her Papa’s).  Papa and Grandmere came for a visit this past weekend and were tortured by played with the kids while we attended an Awana Conference (which rocked)!

Say Hello to My Little Friend

In our morning chores last week, I sent Zoe out to put some cards in the mail.  Upon her return, she did what she always does, left the front door open (the screen door was closed).  I walked into the living room, saw the door open, and started to ask her to please close it but stopped when I noticed something big and brown on the floor.

Hmmm, I thought,  that is a huge leaf she brought in.  I took a few steps closer and realized it wasn’t a leaf but a frog.  I know frogs aren’t yucky.  I know they are just one of God’s creatures and can’t hurt.  But for some reason, I also knew I wasn’t about to try and pick it up.

So, I called the boys to see if they would pick it up and take it out.  Nary a one volunteered (this is the time I miss living out in the country and near a creek where they can do country boy things).  So, I took Zoe out the back door and towards the front with the intentions of shooing it out of the house.

By the time she got to the front door, the frog had jumped under our shoe bench.  The bench is too long to pick up and shoo him out (especially since my brave knights wouldn’t fight for me), so I did the sensible thing.  I called Mark.

He laughed and told me to move the bench away from the door and put a bucket on top of him.  I put the phone on speaker so Mark could laugh at our adventure and found the necessary supplies.  Since I couldn’t move the bench and place the bucket at the same time, I handed the bucket to Ace and asked him to put it over the frog.

It’s at this point that all children who are capable of walking (that’s five if you’ve lost count), were gathered around the bench awaiting the viewing of “the frog.”    I moved the bench and as I did so Ceili Rain plopped down next to the frog.  She had no clue what was going on and just sat there.  Ace froze and wouldn’t drop the bucket.  Even after much encouragement, he wouldn’t move.  I grabbed the bucket and plopped it on him.

Then, after talking to Mark, I grabbed a file folder and pushed it under the bucket while “the frog” hopped on top of it.  And then I (all alone but with five little followers) carried the folder, bucket and frog outside to where his home should be.

After lifting the bucket, it was at this time that Liam bucked up and got the courage to touch the frog.  He touched it several times but never picked it up.  My poor, sheltered, posh little boys.  Next summer we shall spend every day in the woods chasing and identifying different creatures of various sizes.  Yeah right…it’s too hot for mama to do that!  Oh Mark…

Our Little Friend
Liam got brave after the frog made it out of our house.  He decided to touch it.  Several times.

Family Visits

While I should be working on lesson plans, I decided the wait was long enough and here are the pictures from our weekend a couple of weeks ago to honor and say goodbye to Mark’s grandmother.  As previously, there were 13 children and six adults in one house.  And the ages of the kids this time were 10, 7, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 3, 2, 2, 1, 2 mths, 1 mth.   I may have been the only one who felt this way but at one point I looked at all the kids gathered together and wondered where the rest were.  It just didn’t look like that many kids all together.

Bryant & K meet
Book time with Grandmere is always a must!
Miss G was my shadow for a couple of events and so enjoyed watching Bryant.
Papa got some good Bry lovin’ in.
I’m probably getting this wrong but I think this is TJ.  If not, it’s N.  I’m still not good at telling them apart.
Now, I really don’t know who it is 🙂
He, I know.  This is H.  And behind him, a very small Ace man.  We enjoyed watching videos from a looong time ago.
So if that was TJ above this would be N and if that was N above, this would be TJ.
Watching the videos.
J loved holding little Bry.
They almost look like Siamese twins they’re so close…and both have spit up cloths over them.
Brotherly love!
Cousin love
And lots more cousin love.  Zoe got a quick hold of K before they headed out.

What to do…

when guests arrive with small children!

We had some friends over for supper this past weekend.  I’m still not sure how the girls got in there and how Ginger got in.  The gate was locked on the Freedom Center.  Hmmm…

And no, Ceili Rain does not have sunburn.  She has mosquito bites all over her face.  It was like they saw all her sweet meat and launched in quickly!

Cheesey

While visiting with Kristina and family at the jumping place and while waiting on our pizza, we ordered nachos to appease all our kids large appetites.  After the nachos were gone the big kids left to play.  The two littlest ones climbed onto the table and shared the leftover cheese.

Megan taught Ceili Rain how to dip her fingers into the sauce.  She was very happy with the process.  The pictures just do not do the cheesiness of our little ones justice.  They were pretty covered.  Luckily, it was very close to their skin tone so it blended in well after it dried (please know that we did eventually bathe them before they left…and that doesn’t count our pool play).

Surprise Visits

While waiting on Bryant, my best friend planned to come visit.  We were thrilled and prayed and prayed Bryant would come while she was here.  Alas, God said no to those plans.  But, while they were here, we had a wonderful visit.  My kids didn’t know they were driving nine hours just to visit us.  So, it was exciting to see their reaction when they pulled up.  The kids were pretty pumped and even though they hadn’t physically been in contact with each other (only visually…through Skype) they all picked up right where they left off!  Running and screaming and singing, “There are no cats in America” only a few minutes in to the visit.

Our husbands both speak computer…and so…this is what we found the first night we were all visiting.  Mr. John came up a day ahead because he had to work at the local fort this week.

This is what you do with nine kids when it’s bedtime.  Actually this is only six of them.  The crib kids (or ones who need to be contained during the night…except one of them who was still awake), got to sleep in pack n’ plays and various ensembles throughout the visit.  Now, here’s the ages of our kids…7, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 1.  Yep…just imagine the decibel levels which led to this the following day:

We loaded them up as soon as a jumping place opened and threw them in.

The one year olds were super tired and just wanted to go to sleep but we convinced them to drive for a little while.

We’ve taught our seven year olds well, I think!  These girls will talk on the phone for over an hour…every day if we would let them.
Kristina tried to line up the kids who were only semi-tired to get a quick picture.  Jack, the six year old was right behind Ace…I promise he was there.
Believe it or not, the next day was even more busy.  Since I was a day past due, we decided to see if we could get Bryant here by tie dying nine shirts and then heading for the pool.  I did not get pictures because we were all pretty busy.  Guess what?!?  Bryant still didn’t come!!!
You can see most of the t-shirts here.  Eight out of nine kids looking close to the camera (even though the humidity wreaked havoc on my camera)…not too bad!
James’s favorite saying, “Bye bye, see you soon.”  He was waving bye to us as they were getting ready to hit the road.  I was so grateful for the distraction and busyness of having someone in the house while we waited on Bryant.  Plus, Kristina was a big help too.  I actually got to sleep in one day till 7 even with Ceili Rain in our room.  The noise level was amazing but so much fun to know they weren’t fighting but enjoying each other.

Blanket Time…

Since we’ve been attending a church where no one looks at us like we’ve lost our minds when we bring our children in to the service.  And since I don’t want to be running around with a newborn in my arm and chasing Ceili Rain during the service, we’ve started blanket training.

Blanket Training was a concept I’ve heard of a long time ago but learned a little more about by reading the Duggars book, 20 and Counting.  A couple of weeks ago, I researched a little more about how to do it.  Apparently there are various ways to do this.  This is how I did it.

First day, I sat her down for about five minutes with two to three toys on a blanket.  If she tried to get up, I told her, “No, it’s blanket time.” and sat her back down.  The second time she got up, I told her the same and disciplined her.  I actually don’t think I had to tell her twice the first couple of days.  Her attention span is pretty good so she got up to 10 minutes pretty quickly.  So…basically the goal is to increase the time she can sit on the blanket.  My goal is 30 minutes since that is a typical sermon (I haven’t “timed” our preacher but I’m just guesstimating).

She loved it from the beginning, and like I said, she sat on it for a long time for a 16 month old.  I’ve been impressed with her stamina.  I’ve also been able to walk out of the room for brief periods and she remains on the blanket.

The goal, however, is to do it consistently so that it becomes routine.

We tried it out at church on a Wednesday night after three days of working on it.  She did amazingly well.  Our Sunday worship was not as great…but I had not been consistent over the couple of days leading up to worship for her to do it correctly.

I’m  loving it though and hoping it will help not only with worship but also when I’m feeding Bryant!

Meeting the Newest Character

The kids were so excited to come and meet Bryant.  Normally, we would have them up at the hospital in the morning, they would hang out there all day playing in the waiting room or at the playground (which is a great playground by the way) and then go eat lunch and if I was close (which I’m usually not) they would hang out some more and if I wasn’t (which is the case) they would head for naps and be back up long before I delivered.  But, since Zoe decided to, um “spill the beans” earlier that morning, we decided to have them wait at home and see if she let loose any more stomach contents.  Which she didn’t…which leads us to believe she just ate a little too much or had a little something that didn’t agree with her tummy the previous night.  So, we intended to call them when I got really close.  But close came right before naptime and baby came right near naptime.

As Mark put it to Zoe, “you guys wouldn’t have even had time to get your shoes on and he was born.”

So, we opted to just have them come up right after naps.  It worked out great because they arrived right as we were getting settled in our post delivery room.

Zoe was very patient about waiting for her turn to hold Bryant.  But she definitely wanted to get her hands on him.  She is really enjoying showing him off when we have visitors at the house too!

Not quite sure about his hair!
Ace is still laying claims to the ultimate baby lover title.  He just loves holding babies!
Liam enjoyed meeting him but had to know how he came out of my tummy…yet again.  This is an ongoing conversation between us.  Now, just how do you tell a 4 year old something that is very personal and that he has the potential to repeat without lying to him.  I think I did it right but he just giggled and laughed when I told him.  So far, he hasn’t repeated it to anyone (keep your fingers crossed people…for the sake of my blushing skin).
It took Josiah a second to realize that Bryant wasn’t still in my tummy.  The next day, he crawled up beside Ace (who had to have first dibs) and kept whispering, “Hewwo Bwyant!”  All the while patting his head.

Ceili Rain decided he was all hers.  We think her main thought was that he was a doll.  Bryant had been very alert and finally settled into a good sleep when we got to our room.  So, he was still and had his eyes closed.  A sure sign to a 16 month old that mommy had been gone all day to get her a baby doll.

She also didn’t want to share him with anyone else and squeezed him tight when we tried to tell her she was all done.  The next day, when he did stir she looked around at us.  I’m surprised she didn’t flip him over to find the batteries.

We make up “labor bags” for the kids to keep them occupied on labor day.  This year, we included card games much to their delight.

Papa had the job of teaching them how to play the games though!
