The Peanut Farmer

Emmie’s first brace destruction warranted a trip to orthotics two hours away.   I knew that a fifteen minute appointment with eight children meant we needed to find something else to do while we were there.  After a quick search the day before, we landed on the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum.

It was a pleasant and educational surprise in the heart of Atlanta.  If you have a couple of hours to kill, I would definitely recommend visiting this museum and library.

One of the many gifts President Carter received after the Camp David Accords.

Presidential campaign paraphernalia.  I just thought this one was quite funny.

One of my favorite parts of the museum.  A replica of his Oval Office.

With a Bible on the desk.
The ceiling of the Oval Office.

This was at the end of the museum.  A pretty amazing portrait of President Carter and all of his accomplishments while in office.

The highlight for the kids.  Airplane seats.
The closest I’ll ever come to a Nobel Peace Prize.  Pretty cool.

Zoe and I enjoyed seeing the replicas of President and Mrs. Carter’s wedding clothes.

Not only was the museum interesting, we also enjoyed the scenery around it.

We rounded out the trip with the orthotics appointment and Emmie’s second brace.  We spent less than five minutes to get it.  As we were gathering to leave, they came in and told us to head to an inner room because of a tornado warning.

They found something to pass their time though.

On the Mount

This is how our trip idea went down…
Emmie’s having surgery.
We need to have some family time.
Emmie’s been to the ocean.
Let’s go to the mountains.

So, in less than three weeks we planned a very quick mountain getaway.

Our kids are pretty incredible.  They are almost always up for an adventure.  We found a “mountain retreat” called Enota in the North Georgia mountains near Helen.  They have cabins, camping sites, and goats (okay, other animals too).

The Saturday morning we were there, a foal, had been born to this pony.  Such a sweet sight to see this mama and new baby!

Oh, and hiking trails, a small playground (with some awesome in ground trampolines), and a couple of waterfalls.

We would not have been able to hike over 7 miles in one day if we didn’t have this baby carrier and the backpack that Mark used to carry Emmie!

We were only able to find one waterfall but it was a fun challenging hike after all the rain the night before.
Liam found a fairy cave!

King Bryant of the Mountain

I love that when we pulled up in to check in, they all got so excited (and had not even seen the playground or trampolines).  We climbed out of the van in the pouring rain and they were so excited to see our rustic cabin and just the general area.  They didn’t have to have attractions or “things to do.”  Yes, they would have enjoyed that too.  But, they love to explore and learn and go on adventures.  This weekend trip definitely provided that.

Brasstown Bald-the highest point in Georgia and absolutely breathtaking.
I would suggest going to Brasstown when the rhodendrums are in bloom.  They are naturally occurring and everywhere!
They have a little museum at the top of the bald and a train that Josiah just had to get a picture with.
A sweet family offered to take our family’s picture.
But the grandmom had to get a picture with Malachi first.  He was thrilled.  Can’t you tell?

We road a shuttle up to the  top off the bald but decided to walk down the .6 of a mile.   And found places to climb.

Beach Bum

I was blessed, blessed, blessed to be able to go to Fripp Island, SC in March on a retreat with other ladies from our church.  It came at the right time as we had just found out Emmie was going to need to wear a neck brace and surgery was looming in our nearer future.  The time was definitely filled with crying out to God and feeling His peace wash over me.
God reminded me over and over again who was in control (Him) and I enjoyed soaking  up His presence and hearing how He worked in the lives of the other amazing women at our church.
The view from the deck of the house where we stayed.
Emmie and I got our own room.

Wildlife was everywhere!

One of the most precious women in our church and I decided to take a walk to see if we could see any deer up close and personal.  Besides the island just being gorgeous…

We also got to see the deer we so wanted.  Several of them, in fact!

On the way back to our house, a beautiful bird swooped down in front of us and we followed it to a tree across a pond.  Look for the orange beak in the picture above.

While we  were engrossed in taking pictures of the bird, we realized we should watch out for the gators.  At about the same time we realized that, we saw this…

Yep.  A baby gator.  We snapped a few more pictures and took off before we saw a bigger gator.
Emmie enjoyed some Bible study time.
 And some cuddle time.

I caught the sunrise on the last day!  It was just beautiful!

And I also managed to get a few cute pictures of our Ems!

Emmie decided, on the way back, that she wouldn’t mind hanging out with Miss G.

And we got to watch a “drawbridge” rotate at the same pit stop.

PJ Day

Our annual Bruster’s tradition!  This year we were not at our home Bruster’s and had to make due with going to the one in Ge and Granddaddy’s town.  It was in a bowling alley.  Across from the bar.  Yeah.
Well, regardless of the location, which did throw us off for a small bit,  we all got our free ice cream and we loved it!

Emmie got a free cone.  We didn’t think her nine month tummy really needed full on dairy just yet.

I know, I know…you were hoping for an Emmie update….well, this isn’t it.  For Emmie updates, check out our new FB page – Just a Bunch of Characters

Guest blogger here…. Hi, I’m Mark. The dad type around here. I got the opportunity to visit the San Francisco area on business early in February. The work side of the trip was pretty uneventful – your typical conference with presentations and then some hands on demonstrations & discussion. The really interesting parts included the travel experiences, good food, and interesting sights to see.

Travel:  This is the first time I have flown in which, of the four flights, only one person carried on a conversation with me.  I spoke to two of the other people and barely got an acknowledgement. Admittedly, one of the flights departed at nearly midnight local time, so I can somewhat understand everyone’s lack of interest in chitchat. Otherwise the flights were pretty boring. There was some awesome scenery on the way West, though, since we were crossing the continental divide at sunset. See?  Those white-capped mountains in the distance are the Rockies (specifically, the Continental Divide).

Food: After 6 hours in the air and only a sandwich and a smoothie all afternoon and evening, I needed a local, late night filler. So I stopped at In & Out Burger on the way to my hotel in Livermore. They make their fries fresh in the store and your burger on demand. Yum.

Based on a previous trip to the area, and at the recommendation of a colleague, we ventured about 45 minutes from our hotel to a place called Market Broiler. When we arrived at the appointed location as indicated by Google, I was quite concerned because this was not the location that I remembered from the last visit. But after some conversation with the hostess, we determined that we were at the correct restaurant and that they had, indeed, moved from their previous location within the last few years. We then enjoyed a delicious meal and I purchased some of the special sauce to bring home. The sauce is a sweet and spicy Thai sauce which is really good with a lot of different foods.

The other special treat was a visit to a place in Berkeley called Skates in the Bay. Can you guess why it’s called that?

That’s right – it’s actually in San Francisco Bay. They have great seafood and an amazing view of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz Island. I had salmon.

Sights:  When I found out I was going to the San Francisco area I started scouting out potential places to see. One that immediately jumped out at me was the USS Hornet museum. This ship is the replacement for the ship of the same name which was sunk at the Battle of Midway. It served the remainder of the Second World War and into the 1960’s with many upgrades and modifications. The most memorable event of the war for this vessel was during the Marianas Turkey Shoot – US airplanes were returning late in the evening to their aircraft carriers and were getting lost, so the Admiral aboard the Hornet gave the order to turn on the ship’s lights so the planes could find their way. This increased the risk of attack by submarine but saved many American pilots’ lives. It is probably most well known for its last two missions which were the recovery missions for Apollo 11 and 12.  Lots of history and just an amazing thought to be aboard such an historic vessel.

The various configurations of the ship over her years of service.  She started with a straight, wooden deck.  Later, additions were made so that the deck was angled and metal plated.

This is the spot where President Nixon stood and waved to the Apollo 11 astronauts as they exited the helicopter which had retrieved them after splashdown in the Pacific.

The modified travel trailer which was home to the astronauts for several weeks after their return to Earth.  Officially, the “Mobile Quarantine Facility” – actually, a modified RV.

We did venture into downtown San Francisco one evening via the BART and saw the tall buildings and made our way to Fisherman’s Wharf via Chinatown to see the sights. We got in a ride on the trolley that uses an underground cable system for propulsion.

This is a shot of the Bay Bridge as we crossed it from the Oakland side heading back in toward San Francisco.  I was heading toward the airport for the red-eye flight home.

That pretty much sums up the trip. A quiet plane ride home to a family eagerly awaiting me (and my souvenirs) and it was back to the real world!

To the A-T-L

After the hosting whirlwind and knowing we were about to jump head long in to NF world again, Mark and I decided to take advantage of our trips to the bigger city.  We splurged on a room in the Westin.  If you’ve been to Atlanta, you’ve seen the Westin.  According to them, it’s the tallest hotel in the Western Hemisphere (Wikipedia says it’s the second tallest.  Yes, I know, I’ve sunk low quoting Wikipedia).  It’s the large circular building which, appropriately enough, has WESTIN in large letters on the top right smack dab in downtown.  When we were trying to decide where to stay, Mark made the mistake of showing me the views from the Westin.  I was sold.
We were on the 62nd floor.  A mere ten stories from the very top of the building.  The view did not disappoint.
 Emmie liked the fluffy bed.

Okay, she thought the view was pretty cool too.

We watched the sunset.  Oh, the view!  That big building is the Georgia Dome.

After we watched the sunset, we got all fancied up and waited on our awesome friend, M and her amazing 1 year old C to come over.  She graciously offered to watch Emmie after a long day at work so that Mark and I could go to eat alone.  Our first real date since Emmie was born (MRI waiting doesn’t count).

M and I were really good friends in high school.  We hadn’t seen each other in real life for almost five years.  It was so fun seeing her being a mama, something she has wanted for along time.  And it was awesome to catch up!

We didn’t travel far for supper.  We just went up ten floors.  Well, down 62 and then to another elevator to get to the very top restaurant, The Sun Dial.  It rotates at a full rotation in one hour.  So, in one hour of dining, we saw all of Atlanta.  So cool and slightly worth the price.
We had flip flopped on whether or not we wanted to ride the ferris wheel.  The view, we argued would have been amazing.  Yeah, scroll back up to that previous picture.  That little teeny tiny circle is the ferris wheel.  We may have paid more for the meal but I think we got a better view than the ferris wheel could have afforded.
I’m sure if we all hadn’t been sick with a cold, we would have slept like we were floating on a cloud.  But we had colds.
After canceling the MRI, we headed to The Flying Biscuit for breakfast.  This is supposed to be one of the best breakfast places in Atlanta.
It did not disappoint.  It was super yummy.  Although, they don’t literally have flying biscuits.  But they were yummy.
Emmie liked it too.  She also loved the music and danced to almost all the songs.
And your bonus picture:  Emmie likes to entertain herself while nursing.  She goes from this
To pulling back my cuticles or just simply holding my hand.  It can either be a nice arm massage or a mini mani or just plain sweet.

Three Ring Circus

Well, actually, only one.  In January, we happened to be at the library when a friend walked in and said she was there to pick up their free circus passes.  Free?  We like free.  I moseyed up to the desk to find out what the free was about.  If the kids read a certain number of books, we would mark it and take it back to the library to get it certified and then we could get free tickets to the circus.  But only three per paying adult.  That works for me.  Especially since Emmie was free and we had Ceili Rain’s free baby ticket.  For the price of two adults, we got ten people in to the circus.  The kids were so thrilled!
We made sure to head there early for the pre-show activities on the floor.  However, only Zoe was brave enough to check out what was going on.
She got to try on cute costumes.
And meet several guys from King Charles Troup.

And tight walk.  The rest of the crew really missed out but Zoe had such a delightful time!  She’s teetering on the edge of trying to do adult things and still enjoy little kid things.  Her eyes lit up the whole time and it’s safe to say that the little kid things won out this time!
The excitement of the circus overwhelmed Malachi to exhaustion.

Until We Meet Again

Our last Sunday, Y got a picture with Pastor B.

We had to get up bright and early the day Y had to fly out.  Some people were quite cranky about it….

Others were really (okay, really really really) sad.
And others were just plain goofy

I don’t think our Y realized what was truly going on until he had to go stand with the group and away from us.  His usual smile turned to a bit of concern when he saw me AND Pa crying and he realized he couldn’t give us hugs.  But soon….oh so very soon I’ll have him in my arms again!  We can’t wait!!

Ice Cream for Lunch

Y’s last Sunday, Mark and I had a plan.  It included ice cream for lunch among some other things.  Convincing the kids that we were going to get ice cream for lunch was a bit harder than I first thought.  Upon hearing the plan from a sibling, Liam had to ask Mark if we were really getting ice cream for lunch.
“Oh good!”  Liam exclaimed when it was confirmed.  “We thought mom had lost it!”
At the ice cream store, I asked Liam if he really thought I had gone crazy.
“Well,”  he said rather loudly.  “I just thought you were drunk!”
(For the record, I don’t drink and I wasn’t drinking that day)

We thought this would be a fun treat because the first week Y was here, we took a trip to Aldi.  We were looking at several different things in the store and I was asking Y what he would like, etc.  He kept saying this one word over and over again and for once Google Translate was a big help.  Y wanted ice cream.  He loves ice cream and so a special fun treat of ice cream for lunch was a must on my to do list.

We split the kids up to share ice cream sundaes and they were all thrilled they got to choose their flavors and toppings, etc.  Y and Josiah not only inhaled their sundaes but they then made quick work on the rest of the siblings who said they were too full to finish their own sundaes.  We shall henceforth call them the duel trash compactors.

After ice cream we took Y to Build-a-Bear to get a stuffed animal.  We recorded a short message and had it included with his bear.  We were unsure as to whether he would even want to get one but he not only wanted it, he played it over and over and over again and cuddled with it during the night.  I’m so glad we were able to give him something with our voices on it to remind him of our love for him.

It’s all a bit fishy!

We didn’t stay in the lakehouse the whole time.  Cabin fever soon took hold and we decided to go on an adventure.  The Georgia Aquarium was our destination.  Mark kept saying that he wanted to provide a good “Wow” moment for Y.  Something that he wouldn’t be able to do at home.  This was definitely it.

Mark said he’ll never forget that face as the whale shark swam over head.

There was a dolphin show as well.  The rest of the trip he couldn’t decide which was his favorite, the shark or the dolphins.  All of our kids had a wonderful time and we are so glad we got to share this memory with Y.
