What to do…

Tonight, the oldest three took off to a local church for vacation Bible school.  While I was there visiting with friends, I got a call from Mark that I missed.  So, I called him back and got an urgent message to come home.  Not typical for my cool-headed husband.  After a quick chat, I realize that everyone was fine, but Josiah had gotten a pretty nasty cut while playing with Bryant.  Mark needed a second opinion about what to do.

So, I rushed home, re-called Mark and got the goods on what exactly happened.

The cut is pretty nasty and we had a phone consult with our wonderful pediatrician and decided to try and get it to stay closed on our own.  It’s on his finger, so scarring isn’t a big deal.  We’re more concerned about infection/healing properly without stitches.  I used butterfly closures tonight to keep it closed and that seemed to work (I’m going to need a nursing degree after this mommyhood season).

So, tonight, I got home, unwrapped and re-bandaged (I can not believe I haven’t kept butterfly strips in stock here) and Josiah screamed.  Not so much from pain.  More from the fact we were taking the bandage off and he could see the cut (yes, he told us that in so many words).  As I finished bandaging, he sniffed and moaned and stated, “I fink I need to seep in mama & daddy’s bed tonight.”

At this point, we were all for allowing him to sleep in our room on the floor.  However, he had other motives.

“I’m still going to have a bad dweam if I’m not in your bed.”

And then he cuddled up to me.

I love that little man.  I hate he got hurt but I think he’s going to be alright and come out tougher from it.

And just an FYI, he forgot his request and is now happily snoozing in his bed, I think.  But that doesn’t mean he won’t join us at some point during the night…we almost always wake up to find a child standing by the bed or asleep in bed with us.

And then there was one…

I’m now down to one child in diapers.  This is a very strange experience on so many levels.

First, this is the first time I’ve had one in diapers and not expecting another.  I would willingly welcome another little blessing but so far God has chosen not to give us another baby.  So, just one in diapers with no new one in sight.

Secondly, Ceili Rain has basically potty trained herself.  Since about March, she’s been going potty on and off but still in diapers.  She was, until we were visited by a stomach bug, mostly #2 trained for a long time (yes, all mommy talk leads to the bathroom).

Lately, she’s wanted to go more and more.  And then this weekend while visiting my parents, she spent all of one of the days completely dry.   Granted it was mostly the newness of a place and wanting to explore the bathroom one hundred million times, but she did it!  I finally have decided to take the plunge and just put her in training pants and deal with any spillage.

Except the past couple of days there haven’t been any.  In fact, she’s even woken up completely dry!

She’s also got me trained.  We have rewarded her with chocolate when she goes potty and so now, when she finishes her business I get the request, “Go tee tee, choco peas.”  And if it was said any sweeter, she would be dripping with honey!

My baby girl is potty trained!  Yippee!  It’s weird and wonderful all at the same time.

I think I”ll have some chocolate ice cream to celebrate.

Big props goes to having older siblings and desperately desiring to be just like them.

The Bunch with Bells

This dates back to April, but it’s ring worthy!

My mom gave the kids some bells for Christmas a couple of years ago.  It’s taken me until now to get organized enough to teach them a song or two.

At our homeschool care group’s annual performance and project fair, our crew made their debut with very little whining, complaining and dancing.  Here’s the proof:

Merry Christmas…to me :)

As a Christmas present to me in 2010, Mark gave me a block of wood and cement.  Which meant, I was finally getting the deck I’ve been longing for.  His parents came over shortly after Christmas and his dad helped draw out plans for the deck.

And now the time is here…it’s being built.  Although we had parents who had wanted to help, their schedules got ahead of them, so Mark is doing a lot of the work on his own.  We’re hoping to have Papa come and help with the finishing touches soon though!

So here’s the progress…

Before (Yes, I actually remembered a before!)

All children were removed from steps before building began.

Laying over in that heap of pillows is my new patio furniture (okay, it’s new to me).  I was able to purchase it for under $100 from someone who was moving out of the country.  The table was a little rusty so that meant I got to get creative!  I’ll share my finished project soon!

Back to the deck…
Here’s what it looked like at the end of April:

Starting to frame it out.
And at the end of May:

He hasn’t put the decking on…that’s just the plank so we can get out into the backyard (can anyone guess what my boys will be playing tomorrow?).  But, the framing is done and the joists are in!
I still contend that I’m married to a Super Man!  He did all of this himself!  Please also keep in mind that he is working on this when he gets home from work and then on days off…which have been very few with all of our other activities and traveling going on….told ya…Super Man.

His goal before Papa comes is to get the decking down (and he’s hoping to enlist a friend one afternoon so it goes quickly) and then have Papa help with the railings and steps (and I’m hoping they can work in a built in bench too).

Give me Liberty…

Retreat Center in Gleason, TN.  Basically, in the middle of nowhere.  Well, actually, it’s near Paris…Tennessee.  Yeah, that’s about it.

Anyway, Mark and I have been discussing mission trips to take with the family.  There are several organizations that offer mission trips for families but at the cost of around $500 per person.  Yeah, you do the math.  Oh, I wouldn’t have to pay for nursing babes though…that’s $500 less.

So, we were brainstorming and remembered that we knew a family that ran a Christian retreat center.  Mark contacted them and he said there were a few things we could do around the place to help spruce it up before their summer season started.

And off we went, (keep in mind that we had not been home since the homeschool conference).  It just so happens that we scheduled this trip after the big storms in April.  Thankfully, Liberty did not get hit with any tornadoes but they did have over twenty trees down just on the road to get to the driveway.  And on the driveway a big oak (I think) fell taking two more trees with it.  There was a ton of branches and such that needed to be picked up.

There was also a trail and a challenge course all covered with large branches from all the storms.  All needing to be cleared so campers could use their facilities this summer.

So, we cleared.  And cleared.  And when the kids and I couldn’t take the heat and needed rest time, Mark cleared some more.

The bunkhouse on the left and the conference center on the right.  These places were really nice.
A view from the semi cleared trail.

Josiah worked hard.  Ceili Rain did too.  At whining.  Ceili Rain didn’t seem to enjoy the sweat and branch picking up job so much.  She mostly just followed us around begging to be held.

Ahhh, rest time.  And satellite tv.  No internet but we could watch PBS so all was right with the world.

We didn’t just work, we also got to play.  Well, we got to watch others play.  The directors sons were playing baseball so we got to see the two oldests’ last game of the season.  This was the first baseball game we’ve taken the kids to.  They were more impressed with the clean up crew between games than the actual game.  I don’t think baseball is in their future.
Liam tried to climb the 10 foot wall…
And quickly found the ladder instead.
 Zoe really enjoyed this.
I kept my balance briefly, ever so briefly.
Liam decided he wanted down after climbing the ladder to the wall.  We just threw him over the side and let him drop.  Not really.  I helped him down the rope and Mark caught him at the bottom.
The big oak that fell on the road (like that needed a description).  They already had some people come and clear out to drive around it.  But all the brush was left out and needed to be moved.
Do you see the cross in the shadow.  Pretty!
Yes, we all slept good at night.
 Clearing…
 More clearing…
 Ace likes a challenge.
 Zoe too.
If you can’t pull it, might as well just climb on it.  The tree was struck by lightening right near the base of it, so we used that as a little science lesson and looked at the black left from it.

This is where we moved all the brush.  Big ol’ bonfire is acomin’!

And as we worked, Ace’s keen eyes spotted this sitting on one of the logs…

We took the kids in shortly after this.  Mark didn’t have a snake disarming tool at the time and when he did, it had slithered somewhere else.  We still haven’t looked it up, but we’re guessing it’s a baby copperhead.

After all our hardwork and leaving…all the brush is cleared away.  Firewood is just waiting to be moved.
And Zoe and Ace enjoyed the three story tree house!
And we actually managed a great group shot all on our own.
Ya know, I worry every time we go somewhere that the kids might get bored if there’s nothing to do.  But, we had very little “entertainment” in a one bedroom cabin and they had a blast!  Lots of games inside and out that they made up and all.  Having beautiful weather so they could go out and climb and play was a big bonus too.
Oh, and our tick count was at four.  One on Josiah, one on Zoe, and two on Mark.  He won.  Not something to be proud of.  I’m still itching and checking!

And, I’m back…sort of

Still trying to get through my list and get ready to start up next week but this here’s startin’ somethings we’ve been up to this past month…

After the convention we traveled to Alabama and picked up the other half of our kid crew.  We enjoyed a short visit and stories about what they did while we were gone.

One of which included Liam refusing to eat baby carrots because he thought they were bay food!

Bryant loves getting cuddles!  Grandmere was a little fond of them too.

The biggest treat for the older kids was a zipline Papa bought and installed.  That was one of the highlights of the weekend.

Mark also made it a point to let Papa know that Josiah likes the dirt (he will literally roll in it at home).  So, Papa made sure Josiah got some dirt playing time in.

In and Out

So, last week we finished up our school year.  And this week we’re taking it easy.  Ya know, just relaxing and hanging out before we start back up.  Not doing much…whatever.

I am more busy now than when the kids are actually doing school.  Zoe announced Sunday that her church dresses were shrinking!  I think she’s just secretly taking growth pills.  So, we traipsed to the fabric store, found a (what I hope) is a simple pattern and picked one up for Ceili Rain too.  I really need to just replace my dryer since the girls’ clothes keep shrinking like this.

We’ve also got birthday presents to purchase (all total, there are about 16 birthdays we “celebrate” between May 1st and September 1st), plants to plant and dig up (I planted potatoes this year and the flowers bloomed which is supposed to indicate they’re ready), a house to clean, swimsuits to sew (for me…finished up Ceili Rain’s yesterday and it is Cute with a capital C), sewing repairs to make…

Okay, I could go on and on.  So, to celebrate our week “off,”  my blogging will be few and far between.  And I won’t apologize for it either!

I really am grateful I am so busy with these little ones.  God has truly blessed us!

While we’re on the subject…

Since I had to share a Liam silly, I’ll share an Ace one.

Ace tends to take his time eating if there is something on his plate that he doesn’t enjoy.  We also have a rule that you must clean your plate if you want seconds.

So, the other night we were having meatloaf and potatoes (classic American meal, I’d say).  He ate up his meatlof (because it’s meat and what boy doesn’t like meat) but didn’t want the potatoes.  He did want a second helping of meat but we reminded him of our rule so he sat there with the potatoes on his plate staring it down.  Finally, after we all finished eating and were getting ready to head out the door, he decided to eat.  When Mark told him he needed to be done, he got up to put his plate away and exclaimed, “And I ate those potatoes for nothing!”

If I had heard it, I think I would have discussed how he had, indeed, eaten them for something…to grow!  But alas, I was in another part of the house and Mark was the only one who heard and he disciplined and ran off to laugh.

I told you all.

We always win!

If You’re Ever in a Stare Down Contest

Well, let’s just say don’t ever enter a stare down contest with Liam.  He was not extremely happy with my meal choices for supper the other night and let it be known by his extremely grumpy face (which for Liam is a goofy face).  Mark decided he’d try to match wits and make the same face and a few other goofy ones to get him to smile.

It almost worked.

Until Liam announced, “Your frown is making me toot.*”

That did it for Mark.  He lost.  Liam just continued right on with his grumpy face.

After Mark recovered, though, he got Liam back and managed to disarm the grumpiness and squeeze out a smile.

We win.

We always win.

We may have to change our drawers from laughing so hard….but rest assured.

We.

Will.

Win.

*In case you don’t know what a toot is…you’re probably better off not knowing.  I’ll just say it’s a bodily function.
